Two upcoming events have been planned locally in commemoration of Juneteenth.
A golf tournament scheduled Friday is also being conducted in honor of Father’s Day.
The Second Annual North Texas Juneteenth/Father’s Day Golf Tournament is scheduled at the Wright Park Municipal Golf Course and is sponsored by Beehive Lodge No. 105 in support of college scholarships for area youth.
Organizer Will Hobdy said Beehive Lodge No. 105 is one of the first fraternal Prince Hall Lodges in Texas, having been established in 1884.
The PW Youth Golf League of Lancaster, House of Compassion Ministries, the La Campana Noticias and KKVI radio are co-sponsoring Friday’s event, with registration limited to the first 22 men/women two-person teams.
Check-in is at 7 a.m. and tee-off takes place at 8 a.m. Friday. The registration fee is $75, or $60 for those registering before Friday.
An awards luncheon is scheduled following the tournament at the Wright Park Pavilion.

A Juneteenth observance is also being planned for one week from today, June 19.
The event, with the theme of “Hot dogs in the Park — Celebrating Texas African-American independence” is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Graham Park and is being sponsored by the Greenville Branch of the NAACP. The Greenville Men of Valor, Greenville North Community, Corporation for Cultural Diversity of Greenville and KKVI Radio are among the co-sponsors.
Activities being planned include a basketball tournament, checkers and dominoes tournaments and more.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is the remembrance of June 19, 1865, when the enslaved in Galveston received word of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.
