Christmas events scheduled this week in area

GREENVILLE — The upcoming week will be filled with Christmas parades, home tours, music and lots of lights:

Tuesday

— Symbols of the Season, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., at the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville. The event heralds a holiday season throughout the United States. The commercial aspect notwithstanding, this time of year is often characterized by family togetherness, good will to all and giving to others. A new exhibit will be on display honoring three different ways to celebrate a love for family and culture: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. A variety of objects symbolic of each cultural tradition will be showcased. Through Jan. 1.

Thursday

— Christmas on the Square, the 23rd annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Hunt County Courthouse.

— The Commerce Christmas Parade — A Totally ‘80’s Christmas —  7 p.m. Before parade, Christmas movies will be shown in the plaza beginning at 5:30 p.m.; no charge. Cookies and hot chocolate available. Santa will be on hand before and after parade for photos ($3 each or $2 each if patrons use their own cameras).

Friday

The Downtown Christmas Parade, with the theme “Songs of Christmas”, starts at 7 p.m.

Saturday

— Christmas Around the Square in Emory begins with Jingle Bell 5K Run, kids’ Jingle Bell Fun Run, (registration 8:30 a.m.), vendors around the square, activities, Christmas parade at 2 p.m., barbecue cook-off, live music and ending with the movie “Elf,” which is free (dress warmly for cold weather and bring chairs).

— Brunch with Santa from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum in Commerce. Tickets for the event are $7 per person prior to the event, or $10 at the door on the day of the event. Call the museum at 903-886-6055 for more information.

— The Campbell Christmas Parade begins at 2 p.m. at the Campbell Community Center on Main Street. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m., with a concession stand and silent auction, as well as a bounce house and lots of food.

— Candlelight Tour of Homes (Park Street), 3 - 7 p.m. Tickets, $10, available at Park Street Baptist Church/ Welcome Center opens at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 8

— Rains eighth grade Career Club hosts ninth annual Christmas Parade of Homes in Rains County, 1 - 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at All Through the House.

— A Jazzy Classic Christmas, 3- 5 p.m. Central Christian Church in Greenville. European Ensemble (four woman string quartet) and Brass Trio. Free to the public.

— The Texas A&M University-Commerce Chamber Singers ensemble present a Christmas concert at First Presbyterian Church in Commerce, 6 p.m.
