Hunt County, SPCA conduct second raid in animal cruelty case

GREENVILLE — A property along the Hunt/Kaufman county line was raided Tuesday for the second time in a little more than a month, after investigators again reported finding allegedly neglected animals destined to be sold at area flea markets.

Officials with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Texas joined with Hunt County Constable Precinct 1 Terry Jones and deputies from the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office in conducting the seizure at a location on Private Road 2321.

In late July, the SPCA seized 249 animals from the location.

Jones said another 120 animals were seized Tuesday.

“It was the same guy, he just restocked,” Jones said, adding the inventory of animals seized this week was similar to the raid on July 18.

“They got birds, chickens, rabbits, ducks, cats and dogs,” Jones said.

One Hunt County official reported witnessing some of the mistreatment first hand.

“The Justice of the Peace for Quinlan (David McNabb) caught him throwing the dead chickens out on the side of the road,” Jones said.

The SPCA of Texas seized the animals last month because the facility did not provide adequate food, water, shelter or care. The owner of the property said at that time he sold animals he raised at the site at flea markets in North Texas.

It was not immediately known whether criminal charges had been filed in either case.
