Council agrees to new lease of airport hangar

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council approved a new lease agreement with one of the tenants at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport.

But the lease came up for discussion during Tuesday’s meeting, after a member of the city’s Airport Advisory Board said the panel wasn’t consulted about the decision.

The council was scheduled to vote on the lease agreement with Horizons Ahead LLC. City Manager Massoud Ebrahim said the facility Horizons Ahead currently occupies was leased to the company on July 1, 2013, with the lease due to expire at the end of this month.

“They have been leasing this facility for several years,” Ebrahim noted.

Council member Dan Perkins said he had been contacted by Carl Brown, a member of the Airport Advisory Board, who said he had not been made aware about the lease agreement.

Ebrahim said the negotiations had been ongoing for several months.

“The responsibility of the lease negotiations is not by the board, it is by the city staff,” Ebrahim said.

Still Perkins believed the board should have been notified.

“I think it would have been a good process ... to get their input,” Perkins said.

The council did vote 6-0 to approve the new, three-year lease for the hangar, an office building and the adjacent apron and parking area at the airport, at a rate of $3,900 per month.

Ebrahim said the agreement is also contingent upon approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
