Sheriff’s Office to receive personnel carrier

GREENVILLE — The Hunt County Commissioners Court approved a funds transfer Tuesday, which will allow the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office to receive an armored personnel carrier from federal surplus.

But the commissioners wanted to discuss the issue for a while before taking a vote.

The commissioners voted during Tuesday’s regular session to approve the transfer of $2,600 from the equipment line item of the Federal  Forfeiture Account to pay for the delivery of a 2012 Mine Resistant Vehicle, which will be used by the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

The vehicle is being made available through the Department of Defense Excess Property Program, also known as the 1033 Program, which provides surplus military equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies for use in counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism operations.

The county is not buying the vehicle, with the funds approved Tuesday to be used to pay for delivery.

The vote was initially included on the consent calendar for Tuesday’s meeting. Items listed under the consent calendar are considered to be routine by the commissioners and are enacted by one motion.

Commissioner Jay Atkins asked for the item to be removed for discussion and a separate vote. When it came time for the item to be considered, County Judge John Horn asked that it be discussed under executive session, which lasted about 45 minutes before the commissioners returned to open session.

The measure passed by a unanimous vote of the commissioners court.
