Local man found guilty in robbery shooting

GREENVILLE — A local individual was found guilty Monday of shooting a man during an armed hold-up one year ago.

A punishment hearing is scheduled to begin in the 354th District Court this morning for Willie Frank Jackson of Greenville, who was convicted of one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Jackson, 55, had pleaded not guilty.

Hunt County Assistant District Attorney Lauren Hudgeons called only one witness, the victim of the May, 21, 2013 incident.

”The victim identified this man as having shot and robbed him,” Hudgeons said during closing arguments. “The only reasonable explanation is that this man did exactly what (the victim) said he did,”

Defense attorney Katherine Ferguson argued that the victim’s story was the only thing tying Jackson to the crime.

“He’s not telling us the truth about what happened,” Ferguson said. “He’s lying about it.”

Jackson was alleged to have shot a male victim in the leg while in the course of stealing the victim’s wallet and cell phone.

The jury deliberated for about one hour before returning with the guilty verdict.

Aggravated robbery is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.
