The Greenville City Council intends to name a third member to a committee which is involved in the airport lease agreement negotiations with L-3.
Place 2 Council member James Evans is to be appointed as a member of the committee — which currently includes Mayor Steve Reid and Council member Jeff Dailey — during the consent calendar portion of Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The Council voted in February to approve a non-disclosure agreement with L-3 Communications Integrated Systems, prior to negotiations starting on a new lease agreement for the defense contractor at Majors Field.
Reid and Dailey were named to a committee which would be involved with the process. Reid said the agreement was a move to help build a feeling of trust with L-3 and noted the entire Council would be briefed if and when it would be time to consider whether to approve any lease.
The Council is also scheduled Tuesday to consider the L-3 lease negotation under Section 551.072 of the Local Government Code, which allows for a “discussion with respect to the purchase, lease, or value of real property, when such discussion would have a detrimental effect on negotiating position of the governmental body.”
On May 14, the Council approved a professional services agreement with Airport & Aviation Appraisals Incorporated, for an appraisal of the airport with a respect of the lease of the airport.
In January, Council voted to grant a professional services agreement with Taylor Olson Adkins Sralla Elam for legal matters with respect to the airport lease.
The airport covers approximately 1,500 acres. L-3 leases much of the airport property from the City of Greenville, with the original lease agreement reached in 1977.
The lease agreement is up for consideration again in 2017.
Should the Council take any action concerning the item listed under Tuesday’s executive session it would return to open session to do so.
