Current municipal judge to remain in place

GREENVILLE — The current City of Greenville Municipal Court Judge will remain in the position

The Greenville City Council intends Tuesday to re-appoint Gloria Peters-Mitchell as the judge for a two-year term.

The Council is scheduled to take a vote as part of the consent calendar during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Peters-Mitchell was named to the post in October 2007, reappointed in February 2010 and again in October 2011.

The Council intends to adopt an ordinance authorizing her reappointment for another two years, with a salary of $32,960.

Peters-Mitchell previously served as the assistant municipal court Judge for Greenville, where she was appointed in January 2005. Prior to her appointment as assistant judge, she served as the Hunt County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 1 for 24 years.

Peters-Mitchell began working for Justice of the Peace Frank Lane in the summer of 1978, serving as Lane’s clerk, then ran for the office in the 1980 election. Peters-Mitchell served as Justice of the Peace from Jan. 1, 1981 until her retirement at the end of 2004.

She is a graduate of Greenville High School and attended Paris Junior College and East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce). She is married to Butch Mitchell.
