Planting pinwheels?

GREENVILLE — The winds which blow Thursday are expected to help illustrate the extent to which child abuse occurs in Hunt County, while candles hope to shed light on a solution.

The Hunt County Children’s Advocacy Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Texas are planning to “plant” a pinwheel garden in front of the Hunt County Courthouse Thursday afternoon, while Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Hunt County will conduct the annual Light of Hope observance during the evening.

The pinwheel ceremony, with each pinwheel representing a victim of child abuse in the county served by the Advocacy Center in the past year, is scheduled at the courthouse starting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Light of Hope event, in which each candle represents one person’s wish to help eliminate the darkness of child abuse, will be conducted at the courthouse starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday

Both events are being held in observance of April as National Child Abuse Awareness Month.

The Hunt County Child Advocacy Center, part of the Crisis Center of Northeast Texas, helps coordinate teams of representatives from law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services and the medical profession in conducting investigations into reported child abuse cases while striving to lessen the potential trauma on the victims.

CASA volunteers are appointed by judges in district courts who are hearing cases regarding allegations of child abuse and neglect. The appointees are assigned to meet and visit with the children and to act on their behalf when it comes time for the cases to go to court.

Those who may want more information can contact the Child Advocacy Center at 903-454-9999 or visit the agency’s Web site at www.ccnetx.org.

The CASA office can be reached at 903-450-4410 or by visting the agency’s Web site at www.casaforhuntcounty.org.
