FISH wants to be really, really liked

GREENVILLE — Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH) is hoping to get a lot of “like” on Facebook, starting Monday morning, in an effort to obtain a big grant from Walmart.

FISH Executive Director Wally Jeffers said the agency has been nominated to make an application to the Walmart 2013 Fighting Hunger Together Facebook Challenge.

“Only five  agencies in all of North Texas were asked to submit an application and ours is the only one chosen to participate in this event,” Jeffers said. “This is a big deal for us.”

Walmart will be awarding $20,000 grants to the top 60 agencies that receive the most votes, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday and ending April 30 at midnight.

Jeffers said a total of 158 agencies nationwide, including FISH, were chosen to participate.

“We have a one in three chance of winning,” Jeffers said. “I like those odds.”

Those wanting to vote for FISH must be at least 18 and can vote once a day.

If FISH does win the grant, Jeffers said the money will be used to expand the agency’s Meals For At Risk Kids program, which currently is operating in the Greenville Independent School District.

“Obtaining the grant would allow us to expand to three other school districts in the area,” Jeffers said.

The Facebook page had not been activated as of Saturday evening, although Walmart had established a web site previewing the campaign at http://wm8.cap-hosting.com/hunger.aspx.

Jeffers said a qr code will also be available, starting at 8 a.m. Monday at http://apps.facebook.com/walmartlocal/?applet=hunger&organization=24&agency=2.
