Local unemployment drops again

GREENVILLE — Hunt County saw the local jobless rate dip in February to the lowest level for the month in five years.

The Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday that the county added more than 100 jobs last month and that there were more people at work locally than during any other February this century.

Hunt County reported a February unemployment rate of 6.3 percent, compared to 6.9 percent in January and also lower than the 7.6 percent reported in February 2012. The rate was the lowest seen for February since 2008, when local unemployment was reported at 4.9 percent.

There were 2,546 people listed as unemployed in Hunt County in February, a decrease of 222 people since January and 445 fewer than in February 2012.

There were 37,640 people listed as employed locally during February, 125 more than during January. The total represented the highest number of people at work during February in Hunt County since at least February 2000. The county has added 1,042 jobs in the past 12 months.

Hunt County is listed by the Texas Workforce Commission as part of the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan Division, which also includes Dallas, Collin, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Delta County reported the division’s highest unemployment rate during February, at 7.7 percent, Dallas County reported 6.9 percent unemployment, Kaufman County recorded 6.6 percent unemployment and Ellis County registered a 6.5 percent unemployment rate during February.

Denton County recorded the division’s lowest unemployment rate in February, at 5.5 percent, Collin County recorded 5.7 percent unemployment while Rockwall County reported 5.8 percent unemployment last month.

Among other nearby counties, Fannin County posted a 9.2 percent unemployment rate during February, Hopkins County 5.7 percent, Lamar County 8.7 percent, Rains County 6.7 percent and Van Zandt County posted a 6.1 percent February unemployment rate.
