Off road vehicles banned from city parks by council

GREENVILLE — Motor vehicles which enter the local park system will have to remain on the parking lot, after the Greenville City Council voted this week in favor of a ban on the use of all-terrain vehicles and go-carts in the city parks.

Parks and Recreation Director Colby VanGundy had recommended an ordinance after hearing from local residents concerned about the use of the vehicles endangering people in the parks.

The ordinance would prohibit the use of certain motorized vehicles, which would also include mini bikes and golf carts, within the city’s nine public parks.

The ordinance required some tweaking, to specify that only registered motor vehicles would be allowed in the parks. VanGundy noted that street-licensed motorcycles are also registered vehicles.

“But you could not take that vehicle onto the grass or onto the walking trails,” VanGundy said.

Park maintenance vehicles, public safety vehicles, handicap accessibility vehicles and vehicles used in connection with special events would be exempt from the regulations.

The Council voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of the ordinance.
