New speed limit to be set on Monty Stratton Parkway

GREENVILLE — Motorists will soon be able to get to Greenville High School or to the Paris Junior College campus in Greenville a little bit faster.

The Greenville City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on setting a new and increased speed limit along Monty Stratton Parkway, between Interstate 30 and Lions Lair Road. The vote is set during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim has completed a traffic study of the roadway and has determined the speed limit should be set at 50 mph.

When Monty Stratton Parkway officially opened in late January, the speed limit under state law automatically will set at 30 mph until Ebrahim could complete the traffic study to determine the final speed limit to be posted.

The parkway is two concrete lanes with a raised median and open ditches on either side between the interstate and Lions Lair Road. A sidewalk runs along one side of the roadway and two crossovers were included under the project.

The ordinance will be in full force and effect within 10 days after the Council’s vote and publication and after the installation of speed limit signs.
