The local electric utility system is spreading the word that it does not take payments over the phone, in the wake of at least one local resident receiving a fraudulent telephone call Tuesday.
A Greenville woman contacted the Herald-Banner, indicating she received a call Tuesday afternoon from someone claiming they were with the Greenville Electric Utility System (GEUS), noting the utility was closed and demanding the individual’s debit card number to pay a bill which the woman knew had already been paid.
The call turned out to be from a mobile phone in Marshall. The woman called the number back and at first reached an individual identifying themselves by a last name of Sanchez. She called the number again and someone answered “Greenville Electric.”
“That certainly was not GEUS,” according to Jimmy Dickey, the utility’s consumer service manager.. “GEUS does not solicit nor accept payments on the phone.”
Dickey said the utility was aware of the call and had referred the matter to the Greenville Police Department.
