All decked out in their Christmas ‘best’?

GREENVILLE — Most people have at least one, tucked way back in their closet, to be brought into the light of day during only one time of year.

For the second year in a row, Hunt County celebrated the tradition of the “Ugly Christmas Sweater” Friday, by hosting a contest to name the best ... or worst ... during the Christmas employee luncheon at the courthouse.

A panel of judges which included Hunt County Judge John Horn, Assistant District Attorney Keli Aiken and investigator Mike Pierce with the Hunt County Attorney’s Office pledged a fair and honest competition.

Admittedly it would have been difficult to choose the “best” from a group of 10 contestants, all of whom were adorned in sweaters which ranged from the mildly tacky to entries which appeared to have been the result of the vivid imagination of Santa himself, with everything from cotton balls and mittens to ornaments, tinsel garlands and Christmas lights hot-glued on.

In the end, though, it was Raquel Leach’s bright red sweater — mixing elements of all of the above — which claimed first place. Leach won a gift basket while the runners-up, which included Sandy Holsclaw, Charlene Duncan and Theresa Duckworth, all received a gift card.
