A local agency is offering to help area residents in need to pay their bills.
Lt. Kenny R. Jones with the Salvation Army in Greenville said the organization has federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds available.
“We are currently offering assistance with rent, electric and gas, up to $300 per single payment,” Jones said. “Applicants should come by our offices at 4601 King to pick up an application to fill out at home and then return with application and needed documents. The interview process is about 30 minutes in length.”
The documents which would be needed as part of the application include a picture ID, Social Security cards for everyone in the household, proof of income for the past 30 days, unemployment benefit award letter, proof of child support received each month, housing assistance award letter, a detailed utility bill and proof of any medical condition signed and dated by the doctor.
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program was established on March 24, 1983, with the signing of the “Jobs Stimulus Bill,” Public Law 98-8. That legislation created a National Board, chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that consisted of representatives of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.
The original authorizing legislation specifically calls for “sensitivity to the transition from temporary shelter to permanent homes and attention to the specialized needs of homeless individuals with mental and physical disabilities and illness and to facilitate access for homeless individuals to other sources of services and benefits.”
