Santa finally arrived

GREENVILLE — The weather could not have been better as the Downtown Christmas Parade made its way through the streets of Greenville Tuesday night.

Huge crowds stretched out along Lee, Wright and Washington Streets to catch a long line of floats, classic cars, marchers, motorcycles, go karts and equestrian groups during the parade, which had been postponed twice, first due to ice and then because of a cold rain.

But with temperatures in the 60s under a full moon, the lines of spectators were sometimes three and four deep to cheer on the entrants and await the arrival of Santa Claus.

This year’s theme was “Songs of Christmas” and, for the second year in a row, Studio A Dance Company took home the Grand Marshal’s Award for first place overall for its Walking In A Winter Wonderland entry. Coming in a close second place and claiming the Mayor’s Award was Dance Prodigy.

Float awards, for representing the theme and/or the Spirit of Christmas, were presented to Webb Hill 4-H, GEUS, Fix N Feed, Greenville 4-H, Crossroads Church, Louis Powersports and Alliance Bank.

Automobile awards were presented to James LaCook for a 1959 Chevrolet El Camino; Marvin Rector, for a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro; Bobby and Linda Bearden’s 1967 Ford Mustang convertible; Bob Thomas’ 1954 Chevrolet Truck, which also claimed Best Christmas Spirit; and  Marshall & Cindy Brooks for their 1929 Street Rod Chevrolet truck, which also was chosen as Best Hot Rod.
