Council to discuss city officials' employment

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council Tuesday may discuss the employment of City Manager Steven Alexander and City Attorney Brent Money.

Both positions are scheduled to be included under an executive session during Tuesday’s regular Council agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

An item on Tuesday’s meeting agenda calls for an executive session under Local Government Code Section 551.074 City Council Appointees – City Manager Duties and Responsibilities and City Attorney, Contract/Duties and Responsibilities. The section allows for a confidential, “meeting involving the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline, or dismissal of a public officer or employee or to hear complaints or charges against a public officer or employee.”

Before the Council can take any action concerning the item, it will be required to return to open session to do so.

Last month, Money offered the Council a proposal to make adjustments in his contract. At the September 18 meeting, Money said he previously briefed a Council subcommittee on the proposal, “that would allow for some reductions in my contract. It is just something to discuss as you are making your budget plans.”

Money said he could either present the proposal to the Council in executive session at that time, or wait until Mayor Steve Reid — who did not attend the meeting — could be present.

The majority of the Council agreed to meet in executive session, although Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Dailey indicated he would not attend.
