Police: Fake bills floating around Commerce

COMMERCE — A stream of counterfeit $5, $10 and $20 bills are making their way through Commerce.

Last week, the Commerce Police Department was contacted by a local bank about the counterfeit currency, and since have seen many more of the bills around local businesses.

According to Alex Suarez, community resources officer for CPD, this is an unusual case since most forgeries are of $50 and $100 bills.

“These are really good copies,” he said, but added that if held to the light, the counterfeit bills do not have the watermark or the security stripe.

Suarez said even though the currency is small, the amount of counterfeit bills in Commerce are beginning to add up.

“Businesses may unkowingly give it out to a customer or a bank,” he said. “The businesses are then at a loss for that amount that is detected to be a counterfeit.”

Suarez is asking that if a business is handed a counterfeit bill, to please contact police with a description of the person or persons, plus any vehicle description and liscense plate as well.
