Planning a weekend to honor a King

GREENVILLE — The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered in Greenville next month with a full weekend of activities in his honor, including a parade and a 5K run/walk downtown.

The Corporation for Cultural Diversity of Greenville, Texas and the Greenville Branch of the NAACP are inviting all area churches, schools, civic and community group leaders to join in the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration on Saturday, January 18.

The events will begin with a 5K “Run Against Racism”, starting from Market Square at the intersection of Lee and Bois d’Arc Streets in downtown Greenville. Registration for the event will be conducted on site starting at 7 a.m., the event will begin at 8 a.m., and can be a race, a run or a walk, depending on the entrant.

The Annual MLK Parade is scheduled to begin from Market Square at 10 a.m. that day, with staging one half-hour earlier.

A worship in King’s honor is being planned on Sunday, January 19, with the time and place to be determined.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Awards Celebration has scheduled at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 202 Champion Lane in Commerce, starting at 2:30 p.m. January 19. The award is being presented to those individuals who demonstrate King’s legacy of raising public consciousness to social justices, securing progress on civil rights, and loving and serving humanity.
