Splash Kingdom project still expected next summer

GREENVILLE — The weather outside may not be suitable for swimming right now, but officials with the City of Greenville and Splash Kingdom are still moving forward with plans to open a water park in the city next summer.

City Manager Massoud Ebrahim said he recently sat down with representatives from the Canton-based company about the next steps in the process of adding the park to the Greenville Towne Center development.

“I met with their engineer and the owner,” Ebrahim said of the December 13 session, which lasted some two hours. “It was a very productive meeting.”

Johnny Blevins, president/CEO of Splash Kingdom had previously indicated a formal announcement about the park was expected during the first week in December.

However, Ebrahim explained the company still has a few steps to take before that announcement can be made.

“Basically, we are going to let them start the earth work as soon as they line up a contractor,” Ebrahim noted. Things should move very quickly after that.

“We are going to work with them to expedite the process through permitting and platting and so on,” Ebrahim said, adding the city intends to do as much as possible to help make sure the Greenville park opens as planned in June 2014.

The Greenville City Council voted November 19 to enter into an economic development agreement which will bring Splash Kingdom to the city.

Splash Kingdom is also expected to serve as the anchor for the Greenville Towne Center project along the Interstate 30 frontage road, as multiple restaurants are reportedly interested in building near the water park.

Blevins said the official announcement would reveal specifics about what will be included in the park and may also include artist’s conceptions of what the water park will look like once completed.

Under the economic development agreement Splash Kingdom would spend $5 million to build the park, which would include no less than one major water slide, a lazy river, a wave pool, a children’s wading area, offices, concessions and parking.
