Hawk Cove receives grants for vehicles

HAWK COVE — The City of Hawk Cove now has the capacity to perform its own road construction and adequate vehicles for its police department, according to Mayor Billy Cosby.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded a grant totaling $31,860 via a Community Facility Grant to purchase a tractor/backhoe. The city was also awarded grant funding to purchase a new police truck via federal stimulus funds.

A formal dedication is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall, located at 1585 Maria. Representatives with the USDA and Congressman Ralph Hall’s office will be on hand for the dedication.

“After 11 years of being a city, we are now capable of doing our own roadwork without having to hire someone or rely on donated equipment,” said Cosby.

According to Cosby, the additional police truck will provide adequate protection for the citizens of Hawk Cove.

“Prior to this, we have always been given police cars from other departments and agencies when they wore out. We now have two police trucks and one four wheeler,” said Cosby. “We took possession of the truck about two weeks ago and the tractor three weeks ago.”

Cosby added that city officials are appreciative of the grant funding and the new resources will benefit both the city and its citizens.

“The city appreciates the USDA’s focus on rural development and their contributions over the years,” said Cosby.
