No 'scares'-ity of Halloween activities planned

It shouldn’t be too hard to “scare” up a good time between now and Wednesday night, as a variety of Halloween parties, fall festivals and other activities are on tap across the area starting today.

For those seeking a more chilling experience, haunted houses will also be in abundance in the area each night.

Today

— A. E. Butler Intermediate School in Quinlan hosts the annual Fall Festival between 4 and 7 p.m. today.

— The Scare on the Square in Farmersville is scheduled from 4 until 6 p.m. today, followed by a Monster Mash dance at the Onion Shed between 6 and 10 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door for the dance.

— Pecan Grove Church, 1306 Jack Finney Boulevard in Greenville, will have its Fall Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Games, crafts, face painting, hay rides, a cake walk and more are planned, along with pumpkin decorating, cake decorating and costume contests.

— Faith Bible Church in Caddo Mills is presenting “Judgment Night” beginning at 5:30 p.m. today, Sunday and Wednesday. “Judgment Night” depicts real-life scenes of everyday choices and the consequences. Visitors under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent. Admission is $3 per person.

— The Annual Pumpkinfest Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off is scheduled today at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, 2 The bazaar is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and chili will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chili tickets are $4, and hot dogs are $2.

— A Fall Bazaar featuring handmade crafts, gifts, holiday decor and novelty items is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, at First United Methodist Church, 307 S. Preston, in Wolfe City.



Sunday

— There will be a Monster Mash Bash at the Quinlan Sports Association ballfields on State Highway 276 east of Quinlan, between 4 and 7:30 p.m. today. Carnival games for children, a live fortune teller, a Book-Teek Salon, hot dogs and popcorn and more are scheduled.



Tuesday

— The Celeste Elementary Fall Festival is scheduled for 6 p.m. today.



Wednesday

— Halloween on the Square, sponsored by the City of Greenville, DrugFree Greenville and downtown merchants, is scheduled from 4 until 6 p.m. on the square and the surrounding area. The theme for this year's event is "Television Classics", and participants are invited to come dressed as their favorite television character. The first 1,000 children will receive a special trick-or-treat bag donated by DrugFree Greenville.

— Trick-Or-Treat Around The Square is scheduled from 5:30 until 7 p.m. in downtown Commerce. More than one ton of candy is scheduled to be distributed.

— The East Tawakoni Volunteer Fire Department hosts a Halloween Carnival at the fire station on Littlefield Drive beginning at 6 p.m., with hot dogs, nachos and Frito pies available.

— Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 6801 Wesley, in Greenville, is hosting a free Hallelujah Harvest from 5 to 7 p.m., including “trunk or treat,” inflatables, games, balloons, a cake walk, face painting, corn dogs, chips, drinks, cotton candy and popcorn.

— Ardis Heights Baptist Church, 2324 FM 118, has scheduled its Great American Heroes Fall Festival from 6 to 9 p.m., with a prize awarded for the best dressed Great American Hero.

— “Trunk or Treat” between 6 and 8:30 p.m. on the parking lot of the Family Life Center of First United Methodist Church in Quinlan.



Haunted Houses

— The 2008 seniors at Cooper High School are offering a haunted house at the baseball barn on the east side of the high school, between 7 and 10 p.m. tonight and between 7 and 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The event will also include face painting, soft drinks, popcorn and glow necklaces. Admission is $13 per person for ages 13 and up, $3 for children 6 to 12 and free for children under 6. All proceeds benefit Project Graduation 2008 at Cooper High School.

— The “Haunted Trail of Terror” at 3251 County Road 2512/Stewart Road in Royse City promises more than “a quarter mile trail of nothing but terror”. Admission is $13 for adults, $6.50 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. More information is available at www.TheHauntedTrailOfTerror.com.

— The “Haunt House” is located at 4935 Interstate 30 West in Caddo Mills. The “Haunt House” is described as a walk-through attraction “filled with terrifying live actors, Hollywood style sets and incredible monsters.” Admission is $16 per person, with group ticket prices available. — The “Darkwood Haunted Mall” can be found inside Lone Star Mall at 239 North Fourth Street in Wills Point and offers, “15 rooms of scares featuring a haunted elevator, vortex tunnel and for the less braver victims a 3D section including 12 rooms.” More information is available at http://darkwoodhaunted.com.

— The Whitewright Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Haunted House at the old nursing home in Whitewright. The event continues tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight. They will also be open from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Admission for adults is $10 and $5 for children 12 and under. The old abandoned nursing home is located at the corner of Bond and Pine in Whitewright. All proceeds from the Haunted House go to the Whitewright Volunteer Fire Department for equipment, tools and fire prevention and safety education training.
