County names interim constable

By CHAD BLACKSHEAR
Herald-Banner Staff

The Hunt County Commissioners Court appointed Jim Davenport as Interim Precinct 4 Constable during an emergency meeting Friday afternoon.

Davenport replaces Cullen Smith, who passed away Thursday, as the constable. County Judge John Horn and commissioners Kenneth Thornton and Phillip Martin were present. Commissioners Ralph Green and Jim Latham were not present.

“Our first concerns are for the family of Mr. Cullen Smith,” said Horn.

“We will miss the man. He was very dedicated and professional,” said Thornton.

“He was a long-time friend of mine,” said Davenport. “I give my condolences to his wife and family. He was a father to a lot of law enforcement officers, and he will be sorely missed.”

When the Commissioners Court meets on Monday, the court will open at 10 a.m., then immediately go into recess to allow commissioners to attend Smith’s funeral. The court will go back into session following the funeral.
