Group to honor spiritual leaders in county

GREENVILLE —
More than three dozen of Hunt County’s notable citizens will be honored later this month during a ceremony designed to recognize both their spiritual and leadership abilities.
A state district judge is slated to be the guest speaker during the first Thurman and Geraldine Hoskins Spiritual Awards Ceremony, scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 2109 Wesley Street in Greenville.
Dr. M. LaVelle Hendricks and the Hunt County African American Leadership Conference are sponsoring the event. In an e-mail to the 39 recipients of the award, Hendricks said they were chosen, “due to your outstanding achievements, encouraging spirit, community service involvement, and the high standards that you have set for yourself that led our committee to select you after our exhaustive search.”
The winners of the awards include Ila Gilstrap, Oliver R. Nelson, Donald Ward, W.B.Gunn, Rev. Jerald Nelson, Rev. Warren Dennis, Margaret Blaylock, Pastor R. Charles Williams, Chester Lee, Ferrell Brown, Dimple Lane, Maxine Tidwell, Lena Dennis, Mary Turner, Ken Money, Lawanda Johnson, Emma Caldwell, Willie Edwards, Lashun Titus, Jerry Wright, Bennie Wright, Mattie Richardson, Jeanette Smith, Hattie Tennison, Joe Ann Wakefiled, Samuel Tidwell, Juanita Tidwell, Phillip Caldwell, Curtis Williams, Denard Gilstrap, Cornelia Goss, Pastor Carlos Mendoza, Sylvia Castro, Teresa Calderilla Vicenta Castro, Pastor Jose Amaya, Mitzi Money, Carolyn Davis and Erma Caldwell.
The Honorable Judge Robert Newsom of the 8th Judicial State District Court will be the keynote speaker. Newsom’s court has jurisdiction in Rains, Hopkins, Franklin, and Delta Counties.
This event is free and open to the public.
