School accountability ratings to be revealed

By CHAD BLACKSHEAR
Herald-Banner Staff

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is slated to release its accountability ratings for school districts later this month.

The 2009 Accountability Ratings will be released on July 31. School districts will be able to appeal the preliminary ratings beginning July 16. The deadline for appeals is Aug. 14.

Ratings will become final in October.

The purpose of the TEA’s accountability rating system is to evaluate how well districts across the state are educating students. The ratings are based largely on student scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams. A district’s dropout and completion rates are also factored into the accountability score.

Last year, the majority of Hunt County public schools were rated at least “Academically Acceptable.”
