Even as county firefighters responded to a half dozen grass fires Thursday, Hunt County Fire Marshal Richard Hill is urging everyone to exercise caution and common since over the July 4 holiday weekend.
A lot of times people just dont realize how fast a fire can get out of hand, said Hill.
The use of fireworks is illegal inside all incorporated cities within Hunt County. However, their use is permitted in the unincorporated areas.
Hill and other government agencies have recommendations for those that plan on using fireworks.
We want to urge everyone to use caution when using fireworks, and anyone popping fireworks should do so in a cleared area to lessen the danger of a fire. They should also have a fire extinguisher and/or water hose at the site. said Hill. If a particular type of firework does not ignite, do not try to re-light it.
The Texas Forest Service recommends several precautions for safe firework use:
Use fireworks outdoors, away from dry grass and buildings;
Follow label instruction on how to properly discharge fireworks;
Only use fireworks with close adults supervision;
Allow fireworks to cool thoroughly before handling to avoid possible burn injuries.
