Heavy rains caused West Tawakoni sewage spill

By JANELLE STECKLEIN

WEST TAWAKONI Heavy rains are being blamed for a sewage spill Monday.

According to a statement released by the City, about 1,800 gallons of raw sewage spilled out of a manhole on Telephone Road.

West Tawakoni City administrator Cloy Richards said the City first became aware of the spill after a resident contacted them. City employees quickly contained and cleaned up the spill by pumping water back into the manhole and applying lime to the spill, he said.

“We went and limed again (Tuesday) on the surface just to make sure,” he said.

Richards said the spill was nowhere near Lake Tawakoni and said at this time, the sewage does not appear to have run into the lake.

“Because the spill was not near a raw water intake of any city on Lake Tawakoni, no water quality notices will be posted,” the City’s statement said.

The City has reported the spill to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as per state regulations.

According to figures released by the National Weather Service, Hunt County officially received 1.23 inches of rain Monday.
