Planning Commission delays zoning hearing on proposed dance hall

By BRAD KELLAR
Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE The Planning and Zoning Commission already had a brief agenda planned for Monday night’s regular session, but it became even shorter after two scheduled public hearings were pulled.

Chauncey Dennis had requested a change in zoning from Commercial to Central Area zoning for 2215 Jordan Street in downtown Greenville, in order to open what city officials had listed as a dance hall/nightclub business. A large crowd had gathered at the Municipal Building to address the issue during a public hearing, but left after Commission Chairman Doug Felps announced Dennis had asked the item to be pulled from Monday’s agenda and added to the Commission’s regular session in June.

At that time, the Commission would conduct a public hearing, then vote whether to recommend the change in zoning to the City Council, which would later have the final say on the issue.

A public hearing had also been scheduled Monday on a replat, or change of layout, which was being sought for five lots in Section Four of the Turtle Creek Estates subdivision.

However, Director of Community Development John Adel said the item could be handled through an amended plat which would not require the public hearing or any consideration by the Commission.
