Charge dismissed in Commerce stabbing case

By BRAD KELLAR

GREENVILLE A charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, filed against a Commerce man in connection with a stabbing in the city, has been dismissed.

Prosecutors said a witness had been unable to identify the defendant as the culprit.

George David Phifer, 58, had pleaded not guilty. He was alleged in an indictment to have stabbed a male victim in Commerce on July 14, 2007.

Jury selection had been scheduled to begin Monday in the 196th District Court, until the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion, seeking a dismissal of the charge due to insufficient evidence.
