GREENVILLE Hunt County residents will be gathering in Greenville today to participate in the local observance of the annual National Day of Prayer.

"America’s Hope" is the theme for this year’s event, with activities scheduled starting at noon on the steps of the Hunt County Courthouse, 2500 Lee Street.

Among the speakers scheduled to appear, Rev. Brian Keith Thompson with Carter Temple CME Church in Greenville will provide the opening remarks, Marla Rae and the Greenville Christian School Choir will present the Pledge of Allegiance and song, Mayor Tom Oliver will offer a prayer for the City of Greenville and Steve Lawson with Grace Community Church will offer a prayer for the nation.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

Local clergy and lay people are expected to participate Thursday in prayers for local, state and federal governments, as well as for government leaders, youth, schools and the community as a whole.

The National Day of Prayer is being sponsored by The Greenville Minister's Fellowship and it's Coalition Partnerships, which welcome all pastor's and minister’s of Greenville to be a part of the Fellowship and meets every last Thursday of the month at different announced churches and locations.
