Providing more information

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

I wanted to provide more information in response to the paper’s coverage last Sunday of a bill I introduced during the regular session of the 83rd Texas Legislature, SB 303.

The reporter’s analysis of the bill seemed to rely on the face value opinion of the opposition. The lone pro-life organization mentioned in the report has chosen to oppose SB 303 even though it improves existing law. My attempt to reform the law along their lines six years ago would not pass, and SB 303 represents a better, more inclusive effort that will tremendously assist patients and families, as Mrs. Clack commented.

Contrary to the report, SB 303 is the result of years of hard work by many stakeholders and is supported by the Texas Alliance for Life, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and many others. I also added language that made sure the bill had extra protections for those with disabilities.

SB 303 had strong bi-partisan support in the Legislature but was blocked by the lone organization I mentioned earlier via a Texas House Committee through dishonesty and intimidation. This organization has used the manufactured conflict to raise money. The bill’s passage was also hindered by a House speaker who wouldn’t help it along.

As we consider critical legislation to protect life during the second called Special session, I call on everyone who stands for life to set aside the petty, small-minded politics of self-interest and support ways we can make Texas a place that protects all life and promotes freedom.

Sincerely,

Bob Deuell, MD

Texas Senator

  • Kill the YMCA project

In addressing the city council on July 8th, YMCA board president Andy Bench made a bold and highly questionable claim that raised a red flag in my mind. He referenced the alleged financial commitment made by The Greenville Independent School District to help pay for his proposed $15 million taxpayer funded YMCA.
