To the editor:
Dan Perkins has been my friend and next door neighbor for more than 20 years, so I think I can speak with some authority about Dan and his family. This is a good and dedicated servant of the City of Greenville.
He spends an inordinate amount of time representing, and extremely well I might add, the citizens of Place 1. He is always available to listen and to help his constituents.
Two areas of concern prompted me to write this letter of support for Dan.
First is the proliferation of what in the city ordinances are called “Alternative Financial Services.”
These are payday loan, title loan and other so-called businesses. The bottom line is they are predator loan companies with little oversight and charge obscene percentage rates to their borrowers. They take advantage of the ones least able to afford the financial burden users of these services find themselves in.
There has been public testimony before the Planning and Zoning Commission about these businesses and overwhelmingly, the sentiment was they are not wanted or needed in Greenville.
Presently we have about 20 of these businesses in Greenville, and there appears to be a push for more. Dan Perkins is in staunch opposition to any further growth of these businesses in our city.
Second are construction standards for new and continued growth in our city. Dan is a proponent for high quality standards which will promote the kind of growth we would want in our city.
One only has to look at cities with high standards to see their growth exceeds those cities with mediocre standards. As a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, I have been to a number of planning seminars in the Greater Dallas area, and without fail I have personally seen the positive results of high standards in city development. I want our city to grow and prosper, but it needs to be done the right way.
Dan is a thoughtful voice for the answer to my two main concerns, plus he has the experience and dedication to represent his constituents of Place 1; therefore, I ask you to join me in helping return Dan Perkins to his rightful place as City Council representative for Place 1.
