GREENVILLE — To the editor:

Re An invitation from the director

Over 35 years ago a vision was formed to have a high school orchestra in Greenville that included strings to complement the already existing band instruments. But this vision was more substantial than just putting string instruments in the hands of fifth or sixth graders in order to fill up orchestra seats in high school. Through patience and determination a Suzuki Strings program was started in the Greenville ISD and has developed over the last 11 years to include 80 kindergarten to eighth grade students. Starting with the 3 to 4 year olds, the real vision was to cultivate noble human beings with an eye and ear for beauty not only in music, but more importantly in personal integrity and character.

In my past six years here in Greenville I have had the amazing opportunity to see the results of such a long-term vision being played out and feeling the triumph of seeing it develop around me. I am humbled because I know that such results can never be achieved alone; they require many individuals taking large and small roles through many years.

It is with this distinguished backdrop of history that I get to announce the first performance of the Greenville Youth Orchestra  at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 18! It has been a joy to work behind the scenes and finally now with the students of the Greenville Youth Orchestra for the past few weeks in rehearsal. I want to encourage all of you to attend this special historic event and support the talented string, wind, brass and percussion students that have worked hard auditioning, practicing and rehearsing in order to help this vision become a reality.

Your attendance will not only be appreciated but will help the student musicians, none of whom were born when this vision was formed, see that the music they are creating has greater importance than just playing their notes in tune or their pianissimos soft enough. I would also like you to be there to see what you have helped make possible through your interest and involvement over the years. With your help this vision has been made reality.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under (lap children are free) and are available at the Greenville Municipal Auditorium, 2821 Washington Street, 903-457-3126 or at
