To the editor:
I write to support the YMCA bond election from a perspective of the role they provide in the health of our community. As a health care professional, I have long understood and supported the need and development of a comprehensive Health and Wellness Center which could serve not only as a fitness center and playground, but as a cornerstone for building and maintaining healthy bodies and lifestyles.
Many YMCAs across our country have taken on the mission of community health and have enjoyed very successful programs and membership health improvement. Kelly Gaudreau and I had the opportunity to visit a YMCA in Iowa several years ago which has accomplished this very mission and contributed greatly to the current YMCA vision.
The understanding of the future of healthcare is changing following the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. More of our future care will be focused on prevention and “health” care and not the traditional “sick” care.
The cost of your health coverage or possible taxes could very well be determined by your personal wellness. A YMCA offering a wide diversity of programs with the addition of a multiuse Events center as proposed will create a great opportunity to enhance general health education, wellness attitudes and overall improvement of our quality of life.
Surveys questioning what is most valuable to humans always seem to point toward family, spirit and health as the top priorities. Fortunately, the YMCA is focused on each and all we have to do in Greenville and Hunt County to achieve better health is vote in favor of the YMCA; and then use it.
There is risk, but nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. For your future health, please vote in favor of Proposition 2.
