To the editor:
My wife, Marilyn, and I want to encourage the citizens of Greenville to vote in support of the YMCA project.
This visionary project will let visitors and prospective new residents and businesses know we care about our community, and especially care about our children.
As a member of the Texas Senate for the last 10 years, and now as chairman of the Senate Committee on Economic Development, I have had the opportunity to see similar projects develop throughout the state. Many have been funded with taxes. The economic and quality of life benefits of these endeavors far exceed their cost, whether they be funded with private or public monies.
Having studied economic development and the financing of similar projects for some time, I do not think a community the size of Greenville can raise all the money that is needed privately. We must support what is called a public-private partnership for a new YMCA.
This vote is for the future of our community. The YMCA complex plan is well conceived and in line with what is happening throughout the state and nation.
Marilyn and I are very proud of Greenville. We hope to be even more so on May 11.

Member, Texas Senate
