We the people

Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

We the people…

Once again I have been re-reading the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. As a military man who swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, I often read it to remind myself why it is worthy of protecting with our lives.

For those out there who always think the worst of our nation, I encourage you to read our Constitution. Read the Constitution and see the wonder of the document our current president refers to as a document of negative liberties.

“We the people”… That is a phrase never recorded in a governing document before it became the first three words of our Constitution. Not “in the name of the king,” or “by the power of the government”… But “We the people of the United States.” Only in America have “The people” been in charge since our beginning as an independent nation.

In truth, we have lost much of the freedom we once had… Freedom lost to a president, congress and ruling class that have forgotten, or worse, freedom taken by selfish men and women like Barack Obama on purpose in order to fundamentally change who really runs our country.

Article 1 section 9 paragraph 6 of the U.S. Constitution says, “No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States.” Yet it seems the senators, representatives, president and vice president have begun to assume their titles to be titles of nobility. They expect us to begin all letters from us serfs to them with “The Honorable,” as they take over car companies, banks … and attempt to take over Americans’ ability to choose their own doctors and make choices about our health, or how we heat and cool our homes, feed our cattle or drive to work.

Over the last year “We the people” have seen such a rush by our government to take as much control of our everyday lives that we have risen up as a people. We have exercised our First Amendment right “peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” We have put the current government on notice that “We the people” are going to take back the freedom of life, liberty and property that we once had … and are guaranteed under our Constitution.

We have another election for the senate and the house of representatives coming up in one year and 10 months. I urge each of you to vote only for people who actually see our U.S. Constitution as a positive declaration of the freedom of “we the people” over and above the power of our government.

Remember, America is not now, nor ever should be like the rest of the world. Not in the name of the king, or government … but “We, the people”… still.
