Unnecessary changes

Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

I just finished reading the Sunday paper and all 30 of the Charter amendments, and it has become clear that someone is trying to make drastic changes to our City Charter to suit their own agenda.

The amendments may seem simple and innocent taken individually, but as a whole they will make sweeping changes to our charter. Let’s just look at a few of these. Prop. 3, changing from City Manager to All appointees; this may seem harmless enough, but this is a huge and unnecessary change and will adversely affect our city government.

Prop. 6, this seems like no big deal, but with this simple sentence we could be changing city managers as often as we change our shoes. The constructors of the charter have made changing city managers a complicated process for a reason. Just a hypothetical: Say you have a large company in town whose lease agreement with the city is coming due. They plan ahead and using scare tactics and an unlimited bank roll buy some city council seats and the mayor position.

Who is left to represent that city’s interest? It is the city manager. You see this Section 20 is there to protect you and me the city of Greenville; changing it would be detrimental. Props. 12, 13 and 15 are just mind-numbing idiotic. These proposed charter amendments, simply put, are micromanaging gone berserk.

Looking over these and comparing each and every one with the existing charter (available on the City’s website), these changes are quite sweeping and will be extremely harmful to our city government. Even putting the word “simple” in front of majority changes the entire meaning of the word majority.

As is now, I wouldn’t even trust the punctuation changes. I truly believe someone thinks you and I are not smart enough to know that “words” mean something. These charter amendments will eliminate protections that were put in place for a reason. These protections are there in order to safeguard us from self-serving little factions running roughshod over our city. Please vote against all charter amendments for the sake of your city!

Sincerely,

D.L. White
