Passing on the Ferrari

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

The mayor needs to come clean with how much he wants to raise our property taxes.

I went to the City website and found the street bond issue spelled out, but then looking for the YMCA bond, that he and his buddy Ransom conjured up, I found nothing.

I did find the verbiage which will be on the ballot but nothing else.

I am perplexed as to how this project went from $8 million in December 2012 (Herald-Banner edition 12-12-12) with one-half already pledged, to $15 million and the City putting it on the ballot asking me and you to foot the bill. The $8 million seems huge, but with one-half already pledged, then that would be fairly reasonable. But $15 million … come on!

Putting it in layman terms, you’ve gone from an F150 pickup, which is useful and practical, to a Ferrari which is a total luxury item; and you are asking me to pay for it, and I will never get to ride in it because I can’t afford the gas (i.e., membership fee to join the new and improved YMCA).

Please know, if you think that because you don’t own property in Greenville, this won’t affect you, you are wrong. Your rent will go up, the cost of goods and services will increase because the commercial property owner, who already pays plenty in property tax, will pass his along to you and me, the consumer.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to live in a Ferrari town, but Greenville is not a Ferrari kind of town. And you can’t turn us into a Ferrari town by taxing the bejeebers out of us.

It’s by attracting new industry, lower tax rates, great schools, good roads and getting a backbone when it comes to L-3 issues, which this mayor and majority of council members do not have.

Sincerely,

E.B. Johnson

Greenville
