Contributes to quality

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

Re Quality of life

In 1999 the City Council of Greenville passed a Smoking Ordinance to restrict smoking in public establishments, strongly endorsed by the Hunt County American Cancer Society. At that time there were only a few municipalities in Texas that had passed such an ordinance. Now there are smoking ordinances that encompass 45 percent of Texas’ population (American Lung Association).

During the formulation and discussion of this ordinance, Dan Perkins was a councilman and a supporter who was instrumental in the adoption of the ordinance. The impact for the citizens of Greenville is a healthier environment for the public and workers in public establishments by eliminating second-hand smoke.

Dan Perkins demonstrated a strong belief that public service also entails initiating measures that contribute to the quality of life for all citizens of Greenville.
