Brought to light

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

Thanks so much for your article in Sunday’s paper titled, “First and foremost, this is a YMCA.” The details bring to light some important facts:

1. The cost of the building: It is easy to see that the amount of money needed went up when the money might come from the taxpayer, “Other people’s money.” It’s easy to spend someone else’s money. It’s like going to Las Vegas with your neighbor’s wallet. You’re not spending your money so, bet it all. That’s what some folks want from the taxpayers of Greenville.

2. The Event Center: I have to admit that was a good sham from the committee that was formed to see if Greenville needed a new YMCA. It appears that the center point of the marketing ploy, “Event Center,” is now taking a back seat since the project is on the ballot next month. I submit to you that if this thing passes everything pertaining to the YMCA will take a back seat except the taxpayers’ obligation to spend more money. 3. GISD commitment: We have seen the wringing of hands in school districts all over Texas of late that times are hard since the Legislature cut some of the school funds. I guess GISD isn’t in that crowd since it can afford to spend a million dollars on swimming.

I understand that I do not have enough space to hit each and every point of interest. Kelly Gaudreau stated that this is about making an investment in our future. I submit to you that the return on investment of this project will be zero for the taxpayer. Gaudreau has stated that it will take 10 years for the YMCA to establish itself and the events center to become profitable! Guess who will pay the bills until then … The Taxpayer! I thought this was an established YMCA? You need to reread the section in the article titled “The Cost.”

This “feel-good” boondoggle is a problem waiting to happen. You cannot mix private and government when government is the financier with no control after the completion. The headlines of today’s paper tell the whole story, “First  and Foremost, This is a YMCA.” If this project goes forward as envisioned, the only thing the city will have control of is the stamp they put on the envelope to send off the bond payment.

I ask you to re-read the entire article and look hard at what the statements really say. Then vote No to the proposition. Its not a good deal for the taxpayers of Greenville.
