In support of new Y

Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE — To the editor:

A number of Greenville citizens have asked if we can afford a new YMCA. After many years of being a part of the Y, I think the question is, can we afford not to build a new YMCA? For over 50 years the current Y has provided many vital programs for children and adults.

The Y board has spent over three years planning a new building with the help and advice of several professional firms, including the Dallas and Fort Worth YMCAs. A blue ribbon committee met for several months and agreed a new facility was absolutely necessary. The committee also voted for management and building committees to work with the city council to build the new Y if the voters approve.

Remember, voting for a new YMCA is only the first step. The city council will monitor and control the entire project. Voting against this project seeking more information would be kicking the can down a very expensive road.

The only additional information would come from an architectural design including final details of the building. This would be quite costly and without having already obtained voter approval for the building would be a huge mistake. I encourage you to vote for the future of Greenville by saying Yes to Prop. 2 on May 11.

Thank you,

Jerry Grady
