To the editor:
Hello there. Today I am writing about another problem we have in this city, state and country. It is you! Yes you. Keep reading. As you are sitting with your friends at the cafe coffee circle, at lunch with your coworkers or the dinner table with your spouse, you may be talking about the streets, cost of goods, the government budget, gun control, etc....
As you are, you are quite possibly saying or at least thinking … all they have to do is this, that or the other in order to fix a problem, and you may very well be right. Now ask yourself, have I called my congressman, my senator, state representative, commissioner, anyone to offer a solution or opinion? Now ask whoever you are sitting with if they have called anyone. If you don’t want to ask, hand them the paper and I will. I do not write these letters to try to amuse you, pick a fight, or get my name in the paper. Though I am not afraid to sign what I write, either. If we do not let our legislators know our expectations, they will not change anything. Why should they? It is just more work for them, and no incentive to do it. Most were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. That’s how they could afford to run for office in the first place (city officials excluded to a point). Now that they are in, they are set. They do not know what it means to live paycheck to paycheck, let alone raise a family that way. They don’t know how it feels to actually labor for a living. After his nearly 13-hour filibuster Rand Paul said “My legs hurt. My feet hurt. Everything hurts right now.” Really? Well bless his heart. Do not get me wrong, what he did was good, and is what I am asking you to do. (Speak out for what you feel) My point is that he does not know how it feels to work on his feet, 13 hours a day, five or more days a week, 50-plus weeks a year. Please do not sit by waiting and hoping that someone will speak for you. Then just simply agree or disagree with what they said without doing anything. Speak your own mind! Get involved or nothing good is going to happen for you. Please do not be the problem.
I’ll even give you one to start with. How about the City trying to sell you a new fire station as a storm shelter? I know you can run with that one.
