GREENVILLE — A Christian response…

To the editor:

In recent weeks I have seen the worst of some folks, in the very county in which I reside. Unfortunately, elections can bring out the worst in people and I am not just talking about the candidates. I have seen negative editorials slamming a current elected official and only giving half the facts. I’ve seen a Facebook account that was designed to trash talk a certain elected official and this page clearly has an agenda for the upcoming primary. I’ve seen other elected officials come out and verbally attack this same individual.

When my children see and hear all of this and ask me questions, all I can think to say to them is that there are some people in this world who need more of Christ in their lives. I wonder to myself how it is that some are able to sleep at night, knowing that we have this much hatred going on in our county and yet so many who support it.

There is a district judge race coming up in the primary in six weeks. Judge Steve Tittle is our current sitting district judge, and he is being challenged by Andrew Bench. The only thing Mr. Bench can tell me is that he is from Greenville, born and raised. Last I checked, that does not automatically qualify you for a position nor does it make you right for the job. I have heard a few people in my community say they are voting for Bench because they went to high school with him. Again, that doesn’t make someone right for the job and that is a scary thought as to how some are voting. Time and time again, I have seen the Andrew Bench camp make comments on the Herald-Banner, and on a “bash Judge Tittle” Facebook page, and make public statements and announcements about Judge Tittle in a negative, hateful manor. They have even stooped so low as to put a trailer on the side of the road with negative remarks spray painted all over it. This reflects poorly on our community on how some are behaving. What have I seen Judge Tittle do about it? Nothing. He has continued to remain calm, professional, positive and Christian through all of the attacks by the other campaign and their friends.

This has given me so much respect for Judge Steve Tittle. This man has shown me that even through all of the hatred, he has the professionalism and Christian integrity that we need in our leaders. I hate to say this, but I can’t think of any other leader in our community who has this much integrity. I’m so proud to have someone like Judge Tittle serving our community and there are so many more out here who feel the exact same way I do.

For those of you who have fed into this negative bashing of a person, please ask yourselves this, “Is this how you teach your children to behave?” Judge Tittle, I hope you are reading this because I want to tell you that you have so much love and support out here. Their trash talk is backfiring on them and it’s showing. We are praying that good will prevails and you will be re-elected to the position you were born to do.

In addressing the city council on July 8th, YMCA board president Andy Bench made a bold and highly questionable claim that raised a red flag in my mind.
