To the editor:
First I want to say thank you to all of the wonderful people who have said such lovely things to me about the first letter both in person and on Facebook. I am so grateful that people appreciate the special person and GEUS hand that was Larry Allen Baker even if he is never honored officially.
Secondly, two weeks after the initial letter was published, a rather miraculous thing happened. I was checking Baker’s phone, looking for a picture of the dog of a very ill friend of his. There was a missed call. It was from a customer who was feeling rather frustrated in her attempt to resolve a power issue. Someone who obviously was a bit behind on local news told her that Larry Baker would always do his best to help. Thanks to the extraordinary David Herbert accepting my request to be Baker by proxy (a longtime Baker joke with the very ill friend) and the fact that this grieving widow still can’t bring herself to turn off his phone, Baker was able to provide extraordinary customer service over a year after his death. His dedication to service to the people of this town was not even stopped by his death. How amazing is that?
(That was actually the second time in the last few months that that phone has had a call for help that someone has been able to assist with. I may never be able to turn off that phone.)
