To the editor:
Today (July 26) I opened the newspaper to see front page, “Homeless camp sites demonstrate growing need for shelter in Greenville.”
I said, “Oh, God, you are hearing the prayers of the people!” Mother Teresa, the little nun, once said, “There is power in prayer.”
We must help our fellow man, our neighbor. We shall not ship the homeless to another city. They are local residents. We shall have a homeless shelter in the near future.
There will be hundreds to attend the public hearing Aug. 13 to discuss the homeless shelter for Hunt County.
Church pastors, public officials, do come out to attend the public hearing, the need for a homeless shelter is so great.
The homeless shelter must be more than food and shelter; there must be a “training program” to return the homeless into the workforce. They must be skilled workers to apply for a job.
There are government grants to pay for a training program. There are volunteer teachers waiting to train people, help the homeless get back into the workforce.
Perhaps many of the homeless people are in need of medical treatment or medication. There are many ways to help the homeless people get back on the road with a smile, happiness, a new life.
