Arvil J. Thomas, 82, of Greenville died the afternoon of Aug. 18, 2009, at Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 15, 1926, in Delta County, son of John Richard and Martha Minerva Thomas; they preceded him in death. Arvil was proud of his service in the United States Army; he retired with more than 20 years’ service. He was also a dedicated family man, a member of Park Street Baptist Church and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Thomas of Greenville; children Ronnie Thomas, Cindy Lair and Carol Burton, all of Greenville; nephews Gerald and Johnny Thomas of Cooper; grandchildren Nicole Zolna, Amanda Ketron, Emily Weber and Kyle Burton; and seven great-grandchildren.

One grandson, Shane Lair; three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. today at Peters Funeral Home with Pastor Johnny Hailes officiating. Burial follows in Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone.
