GREENVILLE — Greenville High School junior Nathan Sample has a passion, one that cannot be pursued by becoming involved in the typical Texas high school activities such as band, robotics, and football. Nathan’s passion is video editing.

“I like taking all the raw footage, putting it together and making it look good,” Nathan said.

Nathan, who has a higher form of autism known as Asperger syndrome, was recently awarded the Tommy Tranchin scholarship by The Dallas Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, the Tommy Tranchin Award supports physically, emotionally or intellectually disabled students who excel in their chosen field.

The scholarship will allow Nathan to attend a video editing camp this summer at Southern Methodist University, where he hopes to gain more knowledge about the video editing process.

“I’m most looking forward to learning something new, something I’ve never really thought of before,” he said.

Starting out as a hobbyist back in middle school and uploading a variety of short films on Youtube, Nathan now plays a larger role as an editor for the Lion Ledger, an online school newspaper covering events for GHS as well as the surrounding community.

“He’s very smart and very detail-oriented with the camera work,” Vanessa Pope, audio and video production editor for the paper, said.

According to Pope, working for the Lion Ledger provides a “constant, hands-on experience” and allows for “extremely mobile interviewing” for students going out and covering news, much like a college practicum or internship.

Nathan has been the editor at the Ledger for the past two years and will be the senior editor next year. As far as his future plans go, he says he is going to keep following his passion but will leave the rest up to God.

“God has done a lot for me over the years,” he said. “I want to thank him and glorify him. I really want to become a Christian filmmaker, but I’ll probably do whatever God tells me to do.”
