Hundreds search for girl, 12, as man faces kidnapping charge

GOLDEN CITY, Mo. — Hundreds of police, firefighters, rescue crews and volunteers are combing this small town in Southwest Missouri for a 12-year-old girl last seen getting into a car Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile officials are charging a man reportedly spotted driving in the area at the time she disappeared.

Adriaunna Horton, 12, was reported missing Monday night from a town park where she had been playing with her sisters and friends after their first day of school. Witnesses at Hazel Park said Horton got into a vehicle about 5 p.m.

Based on descriptions of the car, police stopped Bobby D. Bourne, of Lamar, about 6:30 p.m. He was alone in the vehicle, said Sgt. Mike Watson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Bourne, 34, was charged Tuesday with kidnapping. He is being held on $1 million bond.

James Horton, the father, said his daughter came home from school in a great mood, then headed to the park a half-block from her home. He said he is certain she would not have run away.

Wendi Jackson, the girl's mother, lives near Kansas City but has come to Golden City to help search for her daughter. "I just want my baby back in my arms," she said.

Velma Horton, Adriaunna's grandmother, said Bourne has worked with her son, James, on some home repair jobs. Bourne once lived nearby, she said, and his children have played with Adriaunna and her two siblings.

In addition to local authorities, the FBI and Missouri State Highway Patrol are helping with the search. Crews are using horses, all-terrain vehicles as well as helicopters.
