Fannin County Habitat sets volunteer meeting

By CHAD BLACKSHEAR

LEONARD The first volunteer meeting for the upcoming Habitat for Humanity Build in Leonard is scheduled for Monday.

The Fannin County Habitat for Humanity is slated to begin its next build for the family of Alberto and Stacie Vega later this month. The house for the Vegas will be the Fannin County Habitat for Humanity’s fourth build.

The first volunteer orientation meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday in the community room at Leonard City Hall.

“Our meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 1 1/2 hours,” said Eva Fryar, a member of the Fannin County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. “We are hoping to begin the project on Nov. 21, but that is if everything goes according to plans. The rain has been an issue when we were trying to pour the foundation.”

The build site is located at 109 Parmele, approximately one block east of the town square.

“The Vega family was chosen two years ago and have been accumulating the required 357 sweat hours,” said Fryar, referencing the Vega’s labor requirement to have the home built.

According to Fryar, the completion date is uncertain, as there are several variables, including weather and the availability of volunteer labor.

“We typically aim for a completion date about 3 1/2 months after we begin, but the last two builds were completed about nine months after the start date.”

Plenty of work is available for those wishing to volunteer their time and services on the project.

“There are many different jobs for volunteers, including sub-contractors, crew leaders, meal coordinators and on-site helpers,” said Fryar. “We are an all volunteer organization, and everything is done by the generosity of our volunteers.”

Those seeking more information or wishing to volunteer can contact Fannin County Habitat for Humanity at 903-640-1439.
